I recently refreshed the CUC in my tank and to my surprise the hermits were attacking the snails (possibly dormant due to transport) and killing them for their shells. This is the first time I have had this happen. I checked other forums and I found that a lot of people refuse to use hermits. Thoughts?

I like to use hermits, but not tons, just a few here and there.

Its all about balance. A few of 20 different inverts is much better then 50 of two kinds.

I have probably around 60 or 70 blue legs about a dozen nassarius snails and about a dozen other snails mixed turbo snails and a few others. Some peppermint shrimp, a cleaner shrimp and 3 emerald crabs in my 120. I like hermits they get in spots other cuc members can't get to. They will pick off the weak ones and take their shells but I have a lot of the same snails I started my tank with 4 plus years ago. I agree, with a bunch of different cuc members to cover everything.

My hermits pick at my turbos. When the turbos die the nassarius eat the soft parts, hermits take their shells. My pistol shrimp kills hermits for trespassing and food I assume. Circle of life and all that.
