For what purpose would chemical media inside a protein skimmer be needed? i.e. Carbon or some other kind of media. I see some skimmers such as the RED SEA skimmer has a media compartment. Why would this be used?

The proper way to dose ozone is to inject it into the skimmers reactor body, then the effluent air and water are supposed to be filtered through carbon to pull the ozone out of both the air and water so it doesn't enter your home's air. Ozone is hard on people's health. Also, people like to put carbon in line after the skimmer cup to filter out the nasty smell of skimmate from smelling up their homes...

I would not put any kind of (solid) media in your skimmer as it will impede its performance. Ozone Yes, Carbon no. .....Unless you have a carbon chamber on the lid of the skimmer cup to help with the smell!

My Tunze skimmer empties into a filter sock that is designed not only to catch any solids, but also to act as a way to use filter media such as carbon.
