I am selling my tank and Ben here on GIRS would like to buy everything and transfer it to his 60gal tank that is empty and waiting.
I have 40lbs roughtly of live rock, two chromis fish, a emerald crab and small blue crabs, 3 frogspawn and 2 polyp groups. and a few mushroom rocks, live sand. in a 45 gal breeder tank.  and a sump made from a bucket.
his tank is empty with lights,
I have extra dead sand and a 29 gal tank that can be used. two mini canister filters and an over the tank filter, two extra heaters.
what is the best way to transfer everything from my tank to his as he does not need my tank or stand.
is it to do everything at once. put all rock and live stuff in bags and buckets. add live sand and my water plus 20gal new salt water to Ben's tank. then add rocks and the rest of the corals and two fish.  Then set up the power heads, heater, and filter w/ overflow?? so in my mind its like a big hardcore water change. waiting at times to make it less stressful like letting the water temp get ready
we could do a two stage. most my water and half the rocks and sand into his tank with 50-60% new water added to his 60 gal. lets sit few days or week then add rest of my rock and corals and fish
or is there a better way to do it in stages?? we have plenty of time so we dont need to rush. but he needs my filter and overflow. so i cant just let stuff sit in mine for too long. i could hook up the mini canisters but they dont do that good of a job.
    any ideas
Ben would like to start 2moro!
i know the frogspawn, mushrooms and polyps and pretty hardy and can be out of the water for a while (will transfer in water of course).
i have plenty of buckets, jugs, cooler, to carry rocks and water and live things.
he lives about a 15-20min drive away.
thanks for bearing through this long post!

i would have plenty of new water on hand matching salinity and temp of your water. then move everything to new tank save a cup or 2 of the live sand and clean the rest including the old sand, tap water would be ok to use. if theres 2 of you 1 could rinse as the other is aquascaping, add sand, old water, new water, let settle add live stock. i think youd be ok.

It depends how long Ben's tank been set and running, or if its used tank and set up ready to go, it should be fine. I bought used 120 gal tank few months ago, then other guy i bought from his 150 gal to my 120 gal. Transfer 150lbs of live rock, sand, 60% of his water, zoas, leather corals, polyps, toadstool, and few others in. He had red slimes on rock already and I patiently took rid of it (took me 3 weeks to remove it naturally) They are doing great this far. About 3 weeks after transferring, I added 6 green chormis. Its been running for about 3 months, and so far its looking great. The way you planned out on transfer will work. Hope this helps.

    thanks RabbitReef,

you can explain more to me when I see you.

it is all up to ben. but from what ive seen on reefcentral and other places it looks like it is done all the time.

so we'll see what others think and go from their.

    we did it!!

Ben and I did the big transfer and it went pretty smooth minus a missing gasket that was defn needed. We took down my tank into a bunch of buckets, coolers, plastic bags, and water containers. He already had a trash can with new salt water mixed that matched my tanks temp and salinity.

We drove it over to his place, 15min away, in one big move with two cars. Ben went right away so he could put the fish, rocks, corals in his trash can. I drained the rest of the water and got out the sand. Ben did a few changes to make his tank work with my sump and I added the sand. Then we both added water as ben used his hand to keep the water from messing us the sand bed. Worked Great! Put in the live rocks with three heaters and a power head (15min later we noticed the water temp drop and couldnt figure it out b/c someone had unpluged all the heaters, lol). and then got the sump to start. and added new saltwater. we waited for the temp to match the water in the trash can and then started to transfer everything over in to the new tank starting with fish, then corals, then mushroom rocks.

The sand in the tank was almost settled when i left. along with lights on, tmep rising, and everyone crowded around the tank.

Thanks ben for the good home! and fish and chips dinner was great!

I will send you that write up soon and if you have questions you can always call or ask GIRS!
