OK, so I got this Powder Blue Tang in my tank.  Great fish, healthy, beautiful, etc.  The problem is, he bullies my crocea clam.  This just started about a week ago.  The clam now has the mantle retracted most of the time and just when it decided to come out a bit, the Powder Blue comes along and nips at it and back in he goes.  Anyone have any idea why this is happening and if there's anything that I can do to curb this behavior?

Don't know either... my guess is feed feed feed. Is this a new fish? My newest fish, an achilles, niped at a brain coral once in a bit. The coral retracts, but bounces right back. I haven't seen the fish do it for a few days. My fish is eating just about anything i throw in the tank now... but i truly believe it takes a little while to get fish acclimated to prepared/aquarium foods. I think the fish will try their best to find anything edible, until they learn that the food only comes in controlled amounts and only at certain times. If it is an acclimated fish that has been around the tank for some time, i would try something new such as a new seaweed color or try a different food suppliment.

It is relatively new to the tank. I just got an auto-feeder so I'm going to be doing some more frequent feedings than the once daily that I do now. Hopefully that will help.

i load 2 nori clips at least twice a day; and rotate seaweed types between red, purple, green, brown. I always believed in getting the fish to eat first, no matter what it is eating, and feed like crazy. As well as offering seaweed the whole time; weather the fish eats it or not. Even though it may get a little anoying to throw uneaten food away at first, they usually come around and eat it all. That may help fill his belly and lure this fish away from a clam... but i don't have a clam and could not give a reason specifically.
Also, i started all of my tangs off by rubberbanding seaweed to rubble.  maybe it is their inclination for grazing....  It seems to work... or at least convince myself that it helps.  And i autofeed small amounts of seaweed while i am at work too.

I agree with mcclandy, AJ!   Often times when fish start harassing the vulnerable, it's because they are hungry.  They will display behaviors that they normally would show in the wild.   If you find that they are not hungry, they usually are displaying their natural behaviors (like maroon clowns being bullies, rearranging the tank) or they do not have the swimming room they need to burn off excess energy.   Hope your PBT shapes up soon![IMG]

Sounds like more frequent feeding is the consensus. That will be my first plan of attack. As soon as my auto-feeder gets here, I'll load it up with NLS pellets and give it a shot. I typically feed foods that have nori in them as I've always hated putting nori in, but I guess I'll start doing that too...

Yeah it sounds like natural foraging behavior. Just feed the crap out of him. I have fish that eat things their not suppose to if they aren't fed often, and a lot. I feed PE mysis with Rods Food every other day and they get pellets two times a day on those days as well, and the day inbetween the tangs get nori and they all get 3-4 hearty feedings of specturm pellets (i use marine formula and A+A formula alternating).
I have FAT FAT happy fish. I still manage to keep my nitrates
