So, in another thread I'm discussing with many good folks the pros and cons of different controllers. Obviously, I'm considering my next big tank purchase. But I'm wondering, would you address tank flow or tank control first?

I have all the major stuff covered right now. I have a top off, I have a system of power strips that's working OK, and my lights control themselves. My in-tank flow is a Coralife CP2300 and 2 MJ1200s. Curious to hear what others think about where to go next.

Controller could do wavemaking, but I'd have to replace the MJ1200s.

To do it right, I'd need 2 MP40s (eek!).

    Hmmm...

I think you will get more use out of a pair of MP40's for now. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of traveling or something. My APEX is great, don't get me wrong, but it's just an afterthought. Biological needs come first in my tank! MP40s are not just another technological novelty, they provide a broad stream of flow that is highly randomized and closer to the pattern that corals and fish experience in the ocean than what your typical korallias or maxi jets provide. They also provide essential displacement and flow for exporting detritus and preventing silt sinks from forming. I think they are my best investment next to my LED's.

What about a single MP60 or one MP40 to start?

all I can say is in my 90 it took 2 mp40s at full blast to create reasonable amount of flow.

    Yeah I'm using 2 MP40's (3000gph ea) AND a Tunze 6101 (3170gph) on my 120

So what about other wavemaking products, like the Koralia wavemaker?

If you want to get serious get the Tunzes or the Ecotechs.

Koralias......they are ok but def not the best product out there.

I agree you would need 2-3 vortices mp40s

yah as far as build quality, longevity, customer service, functionality, and control, tunze and mp40 have FARRR outdone korallia. I absolutely could not keep these colonies in my tank satisfied with anything else. I remember back in the day when I was using maxi jets (the impellar kind) and a korallia or two, and I was killing sps left and right. You will get a lot of joy and utility out of hooking up on some mp40's or tunze pumps. You might keep an eye open to see if you can snag a couple second hand. All of mine were used. No problems yet (3 years of continuous constant running!). It's a lot of fun to see (small fish especially) like anthias dip in and out of the stream, they are quite proficient swimmers but they ride stream like a roller coaster, it's very revealing and natural behavior. Very cool.

  12. I completely agree with Andy. I have used tunze's and the MP10s/MP40s, and I would choose the ecotechs anyday over anyhting else... but yeah I would say start with 1 MP40 just to see if you like it (which im sure you will) then grab 1 or 2 more later on to fulfill your water movement desires!!!
