What are some methods to control Algae for those tanks that start to get out of hand?
Green hair and Red slime among others..
Here are a few idea I have researched:
    1. 4 day darkness of tank with Phospban or something like it.
    2. Chemiclean
    Thanks
    Kyle

I think that Chemiclean will only cover up your algae problem for a shot amount of time it wont help you in the long run to rid the slime from your tank. When i had hair algae and red slime these are the things that helped me out.

    1. 25% water changes once a week for 2 months RO/DI water only. this step might take longer then a few months it just depends.
    2. run high quality carbon and GFO/ "Granular Ferric Oxide" in a reactor if possible. Bulk reef supply has great GFO and Carbon at a reasonable price
    3. made sure my bulbs were not outdated
    4. increase flow to dead spots around the tank

hopefully this helps you out and good luck..

Blacking out the tank will put a dent in the algae, but it will also just release all the nutrients it has stored up back into the water column (N and P) and then you'll need some heavy temp filtering or PWCs to take it out. It it also hard on your corals, but they'll likely survive. Still, I don't like the blackout method. My broken-record answer is an algae scrubber. You don't need a big one (in most cases, you don't even want a big one), if you keep it small and put intense light on it, it will be powerful and outcompete the DT algae. So let's say you feed a cube of food per day, you would only need a screen that is 12 square inches lit on both sides with a 13W CFL and a good DIY reflector, and feed it with a small pump or tap off the overflow.

Depending on the size of your tank you could order a big reef cleaner package and maybe spit it with someone, i forget the website but ninjazx777 knows. Anyway you get like 500 critters for 150 bucks that will annialate your problem. But scrub your rock first and do a water change with rodi or distilled never tap. Also I ordered this stuff called SAT it was like 15 dollars and it worked! As far as the cyno red slime it will keep coming back I used chemiclean 20% water change after 2 days and an ultraviolet light and it never grew back oh yea and more flow it doesn't grow if you flow is good. Good luck this is the hardest part to overcome. Invest in a denitrator and phosban reactor.

+1 for Bud's response.  The algae scrubber is my only form of filtration.  Haven't used a skimmer, GFO, carbon for over three years.  The water changes I do amount to 15 gallons a week due to OCD vacuuming of the rock and the basement sump.  Makes me feel useful on my 300g system.  Corals are thriving.

For the past couple months I have noticed more algae on certain rocks and couldnt figure out why because I just added 40 astrea/turbo snails and many blue leg. Yesterday I was looking online trying to find out why they were not working. I have already scrubbed with a toothbrush and its back with in a couple days. So last night all the snails that were on top of the tank 20 or so I moved them to bad area of rocks and came home tonight to see each has cleared a spot on that rock 3 time their size. I am amazed.
