My ais are set up in my canopy 5 inches above the water line. Is this not optimal and could this be an issue? I have 2 over my 90. They are in my canopy and that is max I can put them.

I am no expert, but 5" seems a little low. I think 8" to 9" is correct, but it all depends on your % of light you have it on I think.

8-10" is the average but that all depends on how many AIs you have, how much power you have them running at, and how large your system is. The higher you put them, the more the light will spread out (and the less salt spray you will get on the lights). I personally like to put them as high as i can while still getting enough light all over my tank, this goes for any of my lights. This keeps them out of my way, away from any possible water splashing, and also allows the light to blend better.

If they are Vegas you are good from what I have read and I have read about every forum on them.

I don't think its optimal, but I think with a 90 gallon you will be fine having them that low. You may not have full coverage across the 4' length, but you should front to back. Changing to all wide lenses might help out the spread if it doesn't seem to be covering the area you want, or if you are getting some spotlighting. You could always borrow the club par meter and check out par readings around the tank you see how good of light spread you are getting.

i have mine mounted 15" above the water and i can grow sps on the bottom of a 36" deep tank so i recomend that you raise them up to at least 10" if possable
