I have some previous sand from my other tank and was wondering how to add it or store bought sand?  Can it be added to the system directly?  I already have 100lbs or so.

Unless it has good bacteria already rinse it really well first. They turn all of your pumps and powerheads off and add it cup by cup to the bottom where it is needed.

don't add a lot at a time, i would add a few cups a day depending on how much you want to add. also it makes the water less cloudy if you use a funnel and a long pipe to get the sand down to the bottum of your tank.

If it is used sand you wont want to add it all at once. I would add a little at a time, a cup or 2 a week just so any die off wont cause a cycle.

Rinse first and easiest way I've found is to get a piece of pipe (1½"), a funnel cut said funnel or something to that effect, cut skinny end off and either glue or tape it to the pipe so that way you can direct your sand without creating a storm.
You can use a cup as well, but I've found this the easiest way and a lot cleaner. Speaking of sand time to order a couple hundred pounds for myself.
