I moved my heater from the display Tank to the sump last weekend. I put it in the first section that receives the water from above then next section is the refugum and the last is the return pump so that first section is the only place it would fit.

Since then the skimmer was acting up, not producing much waste and the bubbles were either gone or not creating a lot of bubbles. I have been checking it daily and if there were no bubbles or a lack of bubbles from normal I would lift up on the air intake hose on the skimmer and the bubbles would take off like mad.

Last night I put my had under the skimmer to see if the intake hose where it connects to the motor was loose or something. I squeesed the hose where it connected to the motor and I think I freed up some salt build up. It started bubbling really good after that. I don't recall ever cleaning out this part of the skimmer in the past.

Is it common to get some kind of salt build up in the air intake hose for a skimmer? Could it have been a snail? Did I solve the problem and my bubbles should be flowing good now? Could the heater cause the build up to happen quicker?

The skimmer is a PSK 600 diablo it is only about a year or 2 old.

    Thoughts?

Yea i heard salt creep can get in the air line so yout have to blow into the air line once in a blue moon.

I had this issue occur on the tank at Taki. Reef Octopus NW150 skimmer. The pump intake has a donut over it with the airline going to it. The owner said the skimmer wasn't producing bubble unless he blew into the intake and that it would only last a while. I took it apart and soaked the whole thing in vinegar, turns out all I needed to do was soak that donut.

When you have a point where air and water interface with a bubbler of any kind, you will get calcification over time. So take that part that is near where the air bubbles out and I can almost guarantee you that there is crud built up in there. Soak in straight vinegar for 60 minutes, then scrub and poke at it with a flat-blade mini screwdriver, soak again, repeat until it's all gone. It'll work as good as new

I agree. Mine gets salt creep and some calcium build up and don't bubble as well. Soak it and scrape it out and works like new again. I rinse the silicone tube out with warm water while the venturi is soaking.

Thanx Guys I will try that this weekend. So, can I assume the heater being right next to the skimmer will have no affect?

Shouldn't be any problem with the heater.

I try to make it a habit weekly to pour some RODI into my skimmer air intake. Helps keep it clear longer. :)

Just had to clean mine salt creep out to builds up fast for me. Don't know if it matters or not but I have my skimmer air intake plumb to bring fresh air in from outside.

Mine gets it, sometimes I take a cup of ro water and put the air hose in it, it sucks the water through and cleans it out. Other than that I just take it apart for reqular maint.
