I am in the middle of a 220g build. I plan on having a mix of SPS and LPS. Initially I was planing on buying 3 MP40's. Two staggard on either end and one on the back. Now I am thinking about just doing 2 MP60's since the overall price is the same and then I only have to have 2 pumps visible instead of 3 plus one less power cord to deal with. Ecotech's chart shows 2 MP60's as overkill for my size but I figured I could dial them down if need be. Anyone see any downside to doing this?

 

My uncle had 2 mp60s on his 220 and had to sell em. Way too much flow. Had to keep them down low so all the modes were basically useless. He has 2 mp40s now on each end and work well.

 

I have a 180 and have 2 mp40s as well and i even have them turned down a bit. They move alot of water.

 

I have a MP60 and 2 MP 40's in my 135 (6' long tank). I started with the 2 40's but didn't get the flow I wanted. The flow reached about 3' (middle of the tank) and died out. At MACNA I talked with the guys about it and they recommended the MP60. I have great flow now as the undertow from the 60 is wonderful! You might want to consider the 60's or, one 60 and two 40's. I have a 40 on the back wall and the other on the end opposite the 60. I run all of them at 50% minimum. I guess it just depends on how much flow you want for your SPS's :0)

 

I would go with mp60's. It took me 5 mp40s to get the flow I needed for sps in my 220

 

I agree with Craig. When I had my 90 I had 2 mp40s, never felt it was enough flow even with them being at full.

 

I started with mp40s on my 220, I quickly changed them out for mp60's. Save your money and buy the bigger ones the first time!

 

Wp25 little with big power. Price is great. I have been unable to justify over 400 for a single wavemaker, but that's me. Here is what I run on my 220 and love them. I have a wp40 hooked up to my apex and plane to add wp25 when I get time.

Thanks for the input everyone. I really appreciate it. I think I am going to give the 60's a shot. Worst case I figure I have to run them at a lower speed. I really wish these things would come down in price some time in the next century. Really regretting not buying them on black Friday. I love them but ridiculous expensive.
