I finally ordered a tds meter and the water in my RO/DI tub is 4, and 153 out of the tap. Is that a decent reading or is it time to change filters.

Change filters. You should be at 0.

Check the water coming right out of the unit in case something is in your container

In my opinion 4 really isn't that bad. To me the trend is what is important. If you went from 0 to 4 then it is time to change either the filters or the resin or both (I usually need to change the resin 1-2 times between filter changes). Ours is usually at 0-2 out of the unit but when it starts to climb up to 6-7 then I make changes. We go through a lot of RO/DI water though (100-110 gallons/week) so I don't change as quickly as some folks do.

+1 Did you calibrate the meter? New filters and resin should result in 0 TDS. Most people will make changes when they start seeing 1-2 TDS. Keeping the filters clean/changed will result in a slower usage of the DI resin. Also, flushing the membrane before or before and after making water will also help the membrane last longer as well as the resin. When I started replacing my fiters more frequentyly, I saw a drastic difference in going through much less resin :0)

BRS sells calibration solution for the TDS meters. Others might know who else sells it/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

When did you take the reading from your RO/DI container? Both Air, Water & Ice, and BRS told me that TDS will rise in a container of RO/DI water, even if covered.

I didn't calibrate it, and the water has been sitting in the tub for around a week I always flush the membrane before I make any more water but I'll make some today and check it right out of the line and see what I get

There was a thread about this not long ago. You can get a 4 just from the water sitting for a while.
