Has anyone used slate in their saltwater tanks? Mainly asking if you think it's safe to use in a marine environment. I'm talking about the chunks of slate you get from a fish store that you use for freshwater tanks.

I guess off the top of my head I don't see why slate wouldn't be OK to use but better to find out for sure...sorry no insight!

What i want to do is glue some acans that are already growing over the sides of the frag plug and glue them to a flat surface so slate came to mind.

I have a Spongeodes on a piece of slate. I bought it already glued and growing to it. I have had it in my 20 gallon for 2 months or so and have not had any ill effects. That's just my experience though and I have no idea if others have used it.

I have used slate in fresh water but not salt, I would not think it would be an issue. Remember to cook it if you are using a large amount :)

I have used true slate floor tiles and also recycled slate housing shingle tiles with no problems. Usually use this for frag grow plates. No negativity that i have notice.

I read an article on RC awhile back about someone using unfinished floor tiles from menards for propagation purposes. They would let the coral grow out on the tiles then take a saw to cut them up into frags.

I've heard of people putting it in clown breeding tanks for them to attach eggs to so they can be harvested.

Just make sure it is light grey slate. The dark slate has oil deposits in it along with iron.
