Skimmers

I bought a Coral life 125 skimmer for my system from our LFS. I am now learning that this is not a very realiable skimmer.


Has anyone used one of these before? Also what woould you recommend for a 125gl?

 

Yes and until you can buy better. They ate OK just not the greatest

 

Many here run the Reef Octopus skimmers as they run well and are priced reasonably. I have a Reef Dynamics skimmer, Deltec and others are good also but cost a lot more.... Just remember Sparticus, LFS are in "business" to sell...not necessarily to provide you with the best products :0) Checking here before buying is always a great idea :0)

 

i would google that skimmer there are alot of good mods for it i ran one for years not the best but after some mods it can be a pretty good skimmer

 

I started out with one. It will get you by, but like I said you will want better as time goes on.

 

While we are on the subject of skimmers, I'm a little confused on the water height on the reef octopus nbw150. It says water depth of 7-10" and to keep the return out of the water but the top of the return is 8" so how does that work?

 

It says "water level inside sump should be 7-10" as long as it's not covering water outlet pipe" its just confusing as 8" of water would cover outlet pipe and from what I have read right about 9"s is about optimal, is there supst to be a longer piece of pipe ?

 

Optimal water level is suggested. With my Coralife SS125 I had it in about 8" of water and it worked fine. You have to do the break in for it and it should really work just about any level. I would keep it close to suggest level. I think it said outlet min .25 from water Surface and not that it can't be under water. Almost all skimmer that I know of you would not want return running out of water(or above) it just is too much water splashing and causes water level issues with evaporation. I had to add a elbow to my Reef Octopus 5000 to calm down the water splashing.

The 8" mark is me measuring to the top of the outlet pipe and trying to figure out how I can put it in 10" of water without covering it with water, the baffels in my sump are 9", so I was wondering if there was a longer piece of pipe that was supost to come with the skimmer or somthing so it could be used in 10" of water

 

Yea guess I will just have to play with it some

 

Doesn't the manual say min .25 from water surfice to out let pipe? Or am I reading it wrong
