Complete beginner to saltwater. I have quite a bit of exp. with fresh water fish keeping. Rare, wild, agressive etc-etc. No salt exp. I would like to start with fish only.

This is what I am starting with in the next 3-4 mos. 75g tank with a 4' flour. strip light. Water out of the tap that is very hard.

I want a Lion fish of some type as a centerpiece and live rock. I really have no idea of what substrate or live rock. What type of filtration etc. I also like the idea of a starfish, hermit crabs, pos some snails of some sort. Not set on a lion fish though that is my intention eventualy. I assume that I have to make sure that things are big enough not to go directly into the tank and into his belly/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.

Let me know some of the bassics; tank mates with a Lion Fish (unless it's a terrible beginner fish), filtration, how long of tank acclimation, tools, test kits. Thanks

I would never advise tap water to anyone for any tank. But as far as the lionfish anything it can fit in its mouth wont work lol.

I love how LiveAquaria lists all of their lionfish as "semi-aggressive". LOL

Like mentioned above, any fish that fits in its mouth, will be lunch.

And +100 on NOT using tap water.

Bulk bottled water from WalMart also isn't very good.

Get a RO/DI unit. You will thank us later if you get one. Bulk Reef Supply has some pretty inexpensive ones that will work well for a 75 gallon tank's needs.

100% no use of Tap water. Some do use it, but it really is more work then just using R/O water to keep all parameter in check.

Ditto on NO tap water. I started with it, then tried to go cheap and used a single stage tap water conditioner, then got a full blown 5 stage unit. All of that in less than a year. I'm just finally getting my nitrates and algae under control from going cheap at the beginning.

If you have you heart set on a lion fish I would suggest a Fuzzy Dwarf. I will not get as big as the Volitan therefore he won't be able to eat larger fish. I had a fish only for 10+ years and I had mostly predators during that time. I do say the drawback to a predator tank is you have to buy larger fish so that the other ones won't try to eat them.

Volitan is really big for that size tank if you have any rock or other fish. Live aquaira says 120gal min. I have had fuzzy dwarfs and they are tough but don't quite have the volitan look. Years ago I had zebra dwarf - they are nice but harder to switch over to frozen food I think. I also had a Antennata that I never got eating frozen food. My fav was a Russell's Lionfish I had in my 75. Easy to convert to frozen and generally don't get as big, but larger than the others I listed and have a similar look to the volitan. Got him from live aquaria and they say 70gal for those guys.

My yellow-headed moray ate both the Russells AND my Antennata in one night... The russells was huge. No idea how the eel ate him... I was really sad. Stupid eel.

Have been doing some reading hadn't seen that they need that big of a tank. I have been trying to sell my 210 on some other forums, I just really figure a 75 is a good beginner tank. Not to mention the $ I would have to spend to filter a 210 etc.

What fish would you guys put in a 75g? I like some of the Tangs and Butterflys. I need to kep reading I guess.
