I've got a 20 gallon tank and want to paint the back of it (my DT has the aquarium backing). What paint do I use? What paint do I stay away from? Anyone do any color other than black?? I personally prefer more of a midnight blue.

Mine is blue and I really like it, my 125 ( and others) were black, the thing I didn't like with black was, I had some darker colored fish and it made it hard to see them.
I've used higher end paints like HD's Behr and the lower end paints and they both held up just fine, I also keep the outside of my tank good and clean so I don't get a salt creep line going.

Do use a gloss, matte, or satin finish?

Jeanette - you've seen ours - it is Rustoleum flat black so if you like it....and if you don't you can avoid that :)

I just did the same thing to my tank. I sprayed the back of it with just plain old flat black spray paint. Looks awesome. I think a flat paint looks best. I have a dark blue stencil can of spray paint. It looks nice but didnt use it since my overflow boxes are black. U can have it if u want

I just used spray paint . Personally prefer blue over black , it makes the tank seem brighter . Just remember since it I'd glass if don't care for it a razor blade will take if all off.

I have used the Krylon plastic paint. Goes on nice and if you need to take it off it scrapes easier than regular spray paint

I used "Flat" and rolled mine on, didn't want to deal with the over spray.
Plus I think you get better coverage, just MO.

I have used plain old spray paint for 20+ years. The new paints are great, because as what was stated already you can razor blade them off if you don't like it and they dry with in minutes. You can have a tank setup in 3 hours or less after painting it. Any flat spray paint you like will do, but I don't use the cheap stuff. You can use it, but I don't think it dries as fast. Make sure you don't over spray the inside. It will not kill anything that I know of, but its better to be safe then sorry. I always tape off the top with something.
I use Krylon and I think it's the best that I have ever used. I also have used the Lowe's brand. It will take at least two coats of paint one horizontal and one vertical to cover the back. I do mine in the sun so I paint it tell I can't see thru it. I bet I have painted over 50+ tanks this way.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies! I found a navy blue Rustoleum spray paint at Home depot that I'm going to try. Its a glossy, but I couldn't find a flat finish in the navy.

I'll be curious to see how it turns out! In my experience it can be difficult to get the dark color of blue you want. I tried a navy blue latex paint once and it ended up looking like regular royal blue.

Got the back of the tank painted yesterday. Used 3-4 coats. I'm very happy with how it turned out. It came out pretty close to navy - only slightly lighter (maybe). Definitely not a royal blue.

Thanks everyone for the help! Now I'll be on a mission to paint the backs of my other tanks!

Is there a reason you don't paint it with regular paint instead of spray paint? Is it just the drying time that makes spray paint better?

Brush marks and spay paint leaves a nicer finish.
