After the storm went through we lost power for 12 hours.  I was getting nervous watching the temps drop in the tank, and when I finally ventured out there were lines down in four spots, plus there were 8 poles that had snapped over.  I was thinking we were going to be without power for a few days after seeing that mess.
What do you do for power outages?  Battery backup, generator, other, or pray /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif  It's going to be a long winter and I don't want to be caught unprepared for a disaster.

Definately a generator. Get one that will at least do your tank, fridge, a light and TV and you're good to go for long outages over the winter or whenever.

2 or 3 years ago our power went out for a week! And my genarator saved my tanks.

Generator is the way to go. I am installing an outside plug in that will connect to a plug in the basement that I can then run cords off this way I am not running cords through a door/windows. I will also be able to plug in my furnace for the winter months so the house does not get too cold.

I remember that winter. It was my senior year and my parents live 15 minutes out of any town on a gravel road. We were out of power for two weeks. 5 days of which we couldn't get out of the house because power lines were blocking our driveway and drifts wouldn't let us go through the yard to escape. Let me tell you it literally hurt to take a shower it was so cold. Ugh.

As for your tank, if you live in an apartment like me, my only choice is battery back up... which I hope to get for xmas haha

Even in apt, if you have a deck, get a generator.  Invite neighbors, that complain about noise, over for a hot cooked meal a couple of times...they will forgive.  When the power is out there is a lot more than tanks that need power.  Trust me, tank is a consideration but living is also a consideration and that will help with both.

Ok, if you have the money, get a generator. If you don't, get a battery back up air pump....I have one by azoo, it was under a $100 bucks, and it will keep things alive for a reasonable amount of time......

Of course, if you loose power for over 48 hours, that $300 generator will save you a ton of cash....

    Generator. End of story.

If I am not home, the only backup I have is a 18 hour battery backup for my vortechs.

As long as you keep water moving and temp reasonable, your corals will live through an outage.
