Well my heater crapped out temp dropped about 10-12 degrees luckily I had a spare in the turtle tank and the turtle will have to deal with a smaller one for a few days.

This past one was new about 2 years ago it was a 200w Aqueon in my 90G tank. After some research it looks like I should get something a little bigger, like a 300W but the location I want to put it in will only handle a 12inch heater.

My question is not about size or brand but if I should spend the extra money and get something like a Finnex TH Deluxe Titanium Heating Element and buy a separate controller. I don't have an apex or anything like that so I am just interested in heating the tank. Is it worth the extra money to get one that uses a controller?

I actually just ordered 3 of the 500w Finnex heaters. I really liked their quality in heaters, but hated the controllers. They never seemed to last long. These I can hook up to my controllers and set from there. I do know Finnex makes a controller with an outlet if you want to go that route.

I would go with the finnex that's what i run on my tank and very pleased with them. I would try to find an apex lite or a reef keeper lite the reef keeper will be cheaper of the two. I have had other controllers for the heaters but they dont last long you have a couple of them go bad and you have an reef keeper paid for. I'm sure you could pick up a used one Fairley reasonable. Good luck! If you need to borrow a heater i have one i hate to see that big turtle get cold lol

I recommend multiple smaller heaters and get some kind of secondary controller.
I have the temp on heater itself only a couple degrees higher than my controller. So in the event the controller fails the heater will hopefully work fine. Both would have to fail to have an overheat problem.
