So, I look at my tank and things looked a little "off".  Checked the temp and it was up to almost 86 degrees.  I turned the heater down a little, opened the hood and went to bed.  Next morning it was at 75 degrees....[IMG]..so I turned it back up a little and it's more stable now at about 78.  This was about 3 weeks ago and many things are turning whiteish.  They are doomed...right?  Not everything looks bad but this just makes me sick.

Sorry to hear about your corals. I'm betting they will pull through. Have you done all of your parameter tests to make sure that there's not something else going on? Maybe you lost a fish or corals that's causing an ammonia/nitrate spike. Maybe something else is going on. Check your parameters just to be sure.

I don't think one day going up to 86 would doom them. Yeah, that's hot, but it doesn't sound like it was for a really long time. And 75 is not too cool. Many of the experts recommend keeping tanks much cooler (lower 70s) than most hobbyists keep their tanks (upper 70s, low 80s) I shoot for right between the two and keep my tank 77. How closely have you been monitoring the temps since then?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of heater? I'm betting it's not a Jager...

As a side note, may want to consider a controller. One of their many benefits is to show you historical data on what the temp of your tank has been over a period of time...and alert you if you tank gets too hot. Yeah, it's a bit of an investment, but I'm guessing that if this ends up killing some of your corals, you would probably want to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.

Best of luck. I hope everything pulls through.

All fish are accounted for.  I really don't know how long it was at mid 80's.  It was like bath water when i put my hand in there.  I guess I'll just wait and see if they come out of it or not.  Thanks AJ

I'm guessing most of them will recover. I just got a coral that arrived in 55 degree water and it sloughed a little and now is recovering.

I would just hang tight and see what happens.

Sorry to hear about the temperature swings Phyllis! I agree totally with the guys that they will probably pull through ;-0) Put a Reefkeeper Lite on your Christmas wish list Phyllis (About a $100-115). When I saw your tank it was lovely so with your practice of good husbandry, I'm pretty confident they will pull through...just give them some time :=)
