Coral Rescue?

Anybody have any good experience/advice with rescuing a dying coral? We have a Closed Brain that we bought really discounted because it was dying, and we're hoping to try to revive it. I'd say 3/4 of it is bleached out, but there is SOME color on still. Any tips or tricks?

I can take a picture of anyone needs, just let me know.

 

I've always had good success with coral revival using live feeds in the water column targeted at that specific coral (jets off).... kind of babying it for a bit. Also if it goes all the way, don't remove it from the tank *unless it's an absolute must* I have found that most corals I've 'lost' will come back on me... including one that I (lazily) left in there for 9 months just as I was going to toss it out, it made it's come back.

 

I know dipping them in Iodine is said to help. I don't know, but you can do some research on it more. It did help with mine and it recovered alright.

I would say it really depends on what the issue is. Does it just need some loving tender care, or was it bleached out from too much light?

Pictures and what environment it came from, would be helpful.

It was bought from PetCo, I don't know exactly what kind of lighting they have on them, but there was another coral in there bleached out as well. Plus they don't have the best care for their tanks :/ It was sitting up on the top rack too so I'm thinking it might've gotten too much light, rather than moderate.

After it was home, it did get dipped in Reef Dip. Last night I spot fed it with Coral Frenzy. Today it has some skin/slime like stuff coming off it.

that favia looks gone to me.

 

Is that what it is? They had it listed as a Closed Brain coral. I know Petco has been wrong on naming fish too though, lol.

There is still some coloration in it, a little red and some green, so I'm hoping it isn't all gone quite yet. I guess we'll see :/

 

The favias and favites are also often called 'closed brains'. You can check on liveaquaria.com for the many other names they may be called.

 

There is a lot of damage. If there are eyes in the middle, I would just let it be, keep it in a place with flow and don't touch it!

 

There are! They look like little mouths, I've seen them open and seen them closed, so there has to be some life in there! It's currently on the sand, and the area it's in gets moderate-light flow I'd say.

 

yeah I would echo what chris said... flow and no touching.... give it some time to bounce back. you never know, I've had one gone all the way **nothing visible** and bounce back.
