aquarium rock wall

Looking for rock wall "instructions". I've found macro rocks morder, but was wonder what people have done.

[hr]I just finished building one myself. Havent got my build thread started yet but I can try and walk you through what I did. I used the following: Egg crate, black pond foam, z-poxy, zip ties, and sand/rock from marco rocks. Basically I cut the egg crate to the shape of the tank wall. Then I zip tied the rock to the egg crate. Filled in all the gaps between the rocks with the black pond foam. After the foam had dried I removed the zip ties,  covered the foam with z-poxy 2 part epoxy and sprinkled the sand on to it. I will have more details/pics in my build thread I plan on starting but if you want to PM me I can give you more details or answer questions.

But what MillerTime said is basicly what I did. I used Great Stuff foam but should of used the black pond foam.

From what i have read, if u don't seal of the foam almost perfectly with apoxy it becomes toxic

 

I think the toxic part may be true for some of the foams but you will be safe with pond foam. I have seen many tanks where they didnt even cover the foam and just let coralline grow over it.

The black pond foam isn't toxic. I didn't seal all of mine and its fine. I am not sure about any of the other foam. You just have to let it dry all the way in the thicker parts of the foam. I let mine dry for a couple weeks mainly because of time constraints. I didn't use any zip ties to hold the rock as the foam held it in place all by its self.

 

Total Pond 12 oz. Waterfall Foam Sealant, is this the same as foam?

 

Also what epoxy should I use, that I could get around Des Monies

I used the great stuff pond foam found at Menards. I used z-poxy which can be found at bass pro but I purchased it on amazon as it was way cheaper.

 

I bought waterfall foam.... Which I think is the exact same, its just the "home depot" brand. I looked at lowe's to and they had something similar but different name. Says its black foam used for ponds. I also went to Micheals and got 2-part liquid epoxy.... But reading the warning label says may produce allergic skin reactions, so idk about it. But looking up the z-poxy, its says be can be allergic.

 

I used z-poxy because it says drinking water safe. It's also what a lot of others I had talked to used without any problems.

Yes that's the one. One bottle is pink and the other is black.

 

If your not in a hurry and don't mind letting it cure in water for a few months you could use Portland cement and dry rock to make your wall

 

need to becareful using tat great stuff or any foam. That stuff is very boyant and I know a couple folks had some trouble wit their walls floating when they were done.

 

How have people kept the wall from floating? I'd rather not glue it to the back, but if i have to i guess i would

 

If you use the mortar from marco rocks it will never float. Sets up in hrs.

 

I put bigger rocks in the foam never had an issue of floating .The foam holds the rocks in place I used some pretty big chunks on parts of my wall and it hasn't floated or moved. If you use small pieces of rock it will probably float like rubble. I used a mixture of rubble and bigger rocks.
