???algee???

so i have had some extra equiment laying around so a few weeks ago i set up a frag set up i used about half my tanks water and half new water and now it will not stop growing green algee on the surfaces and it grows like crazy.....i have mh lights on it and i think that may have something to do with it since the total water amount it around 20 is this possiable??? any ideas how to fix this problum????please help and thank you

not very high was thinking that maybe the problum but the couple power heads i have are to big

 

im sure someone with more experiance will have a good answer for you, but my guess is flow.

 

Well, an algae bloom is typical on a tank that has just cycled, but other things to consider include both flow and lighting. If you're using old bulbs, they will grow algae better than corals.

My understanding and experience with most algaes is that bad lighting alone isn't enough to fuel the algae. Generally there is a phosphate issue. Can you give any more info on the tank at all? You say it's a frag tank so I doubt you are feeding it much if at all.

 

Phosphates = algae.

My opinion is that running GFO through a reactor is as important as a protein skimmer any more.

 

+1 on the phosphate reactor. I was having a TERRIBLE time with hair algae when I first started. A few here suggested getting a phosphate reactor with GFO. Took about a month of running the reactor but eventually the algae dissapeared.

only reason i mentioned flow was because he said on the surface, and that led me to belive on the surface of his water like a skim of algae floating.
