adding salt

Is there anything wrong with mixing salt in the DT? (new set up, NO livestock) if not what is the proper way? Just adding small amounts at a time?

If there is nothing alive in the tank, i.e. fish, inverts or corals, then mixing in there is absolutely fine!
I would be sure there is ample flow to mix the salt and take your time allowing it to mix before adding too much and overshooting your desired specific gravity.

Go for it,

General rule is to mix it for 24 hours before adding it to a live tank though.

 

Generally, people use a Rubbermaid tub or something like that to make saltwater, then use a pump to add it to the display tank. I have a 20g Rubbermaid tub, a small heater and a powerhead. I usually let it sit overnight to get thoroughly mixed and heated up to the tank temp. If you have no live rock, or any other living things in the tank, it should be fine.   After you start adding things though, make sure to make it some were outside of the tank

 

on this note. many of you know i have had trouble keeping fish alive. would the fact i buy premixed water and have it stored in the closed container be a culprit?

perhaps i should get the water a day or the day before a water change?

 

Aerate the water when you mix it. Lowers CO2, raises oxygen and pH.

But save up for and get an RO/DI unit. Air Water and Ice makes good stuff and offers a club discount. Many nasty problems start with iffy water.
