So I decided to mess around with my value fixtures. They have always been a bit white with both channels cracked up high and didn't have as many violets as I would like so I decided to order some violets from reefbreeders and swap a few whites out. I ended up changing 4 leds per fixture, the 4 whites in the outer rows. My advice is to not buy a $9 solding gun to do it... I couldn't figure out why I was having trouble until I realized my gun wasn't getting the tip hot enough. Well I eventually got it done, some ugly soldering, but everything works and best of all looks fantastic. Running both channels at 75 now. I noticed some browining on the LEDs, so I won't run them quite full power anymore, but am happy with the swap! Pretty cheap too, under $50 for leds and equipment for 3 fixtures, but I would spend more on a better gun.

Because of the overwhelming response to this thread (I think gmail nearly crashed with so many notification emails), here is a revised PAR map. I did one long ago, but raised the lights up since then, and angled the LEDs. I tried no optics, it looked good, but with only 200PAR at the surface it wasn't quite enough. Even with the new violets I am going to run 75% white, 100 blue. I will be putting the tank contents into a 120 rimless this winter and adding another value fixture.

That image is squished, but it still works.

I have a Chinese made LED fixture that has worked well so far. I would like a few violets in mine too. Maybe I'll have to look into swapping some out. I'm a little nervous to take it apart though.
