I'm in the process of getting the 58 up and running.  And I've come to the point where I'm pondering a sand bottom or bb.[IMG]   I'll be running a sump and thought I might put sand in it.  I've got two bags of sand that I scored from the guy from colorado that was making a trip back from the east coast.   My reef will have zoo's, rhodactis, ricordia,  a few leathers and SPS.  I'm also considering a goby/shrimp pair, but it's not high on my priority list.  I really don't want to deal with a sand storm and a nutrient sink.  If I go bb the goal would be to try to get zoos to cover the bottom, it might be kind of cool.

I will throw a thrid option at you... Crushed coral... (putting on fire suit)

Crushed coral can be vacumed like a fresh water tank. It can be dug in by many gobies. It looks nice and white. Last but not least... When your zoos grow onto it you can easily transplant them to another rock by gluing the attatched crushed coral to the rock or frag plug... /site/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I guess some people like the BB and the ease of keeping it clean but it kind of reminds me of a room with subfloor exposed, not very natural looking.  I do like the idea of a "growing floor" however and I agree, that would be cool.
I keep a 2-3" white sand bottom and I have a built in cleaner.  His name is Mr Goby and his job is to keep the sand clean and he takes his job very seriously.  This also means that he will scoop up and move anything that he considers on his turf.  Small price to pay for a clean lawn though!
Mr Goby is an orange diamond goby that was maybe 1 1/2" when I got him and is now 5-6" long.  He eats any kind of food offered and also whatever he is scooping out of the sand and spitting out his gills.  Kids love him!

I've got around 70lbs of sand on hand, I agree about  unnatural look.  And I like the idea of a goby.  I'll think I'll put the sand to use.
