I had noticed over the last week or two that my skimmer (Octopus DNW-200 Recirc) didn't seem to be producing much skimmate.   I didn't think a whole lot of it until tonight when I noticed that the bubble density in the main skimmer chamber didn't seem to be nearly what it should be.
My immediate thought was that it wasn't able to get any air so I started to inspect everything on the skimmer.  As soon as I pulled off the silencer on the air intake tube, the skimmer when absolutely nuts and started overflowing into my runoff bucket.
It turns out that the air intake on the silencer was almost complete blocked off by salt and other grime.
So...  Don't forget to check/clean your silencer when you clean your skimmer!

I actually dont run a silencer on mine, i give my air intake hose a good cleaning once in awhile when i notice my skimate production is low.
    Good tip though.

Yeah, I'm not going to put mine back on either (no real reason for it) but if I had my skimmer in a sump under my display I probably would...

Come to think of it, this is probably why the skimmer in our tank at work hasn't been performing well lately.

    I never ran mine.

Run some FW thru the venturi too as it seem to keep the salt creep at bay.

I've seen some ppl just dip them in the saltwater, i never thought that was good practice, and i thought it basically just makes it clog faster, but its been a few weeks and it is still running fine.

Every couple days I run FW thru the venturi. Basically take a little cup and let the thing slurp the water up.

Keeps it clean without having to break it down.

What kind of silencer do you use? I attempted to use a silencer on my asm skimmer using a film canister filled with cotton and it didn't make a difference. I'm considering only running my skimmer at night because of the noise.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I was looking at the silencers that came with my Octo 250. They are actually quite restrictive. I also didnt like the hose that came with it either. Removing both of these things and installing a larger hose has upped my skimate production.

What I really need to do though is order the stuff to do the mesh mod.

i had similar issues with the Amiracle venturi skimmer i started with. I would get so frustrated with it that i said forget it. I am running a Remora skimmer now, and like it.
