    Greeting to all.  I have been in the hobby for 5 years now doing reef for 3.  I joined with the intentions of expanding my  knowledge of coral reefs and to meet other people who are as interested in the hobby as much as me.  I seem to find alot of people who start the hobby and decline dramaticly over a couple of months due to price or killing corals.  Which I guess is expected at my age.  I have a 125 with a 75 sump/refugium.  I am wanting to upgrade to a 125.  I filter only with first live rock, then rubble then goes through a large amount of different plants that I have carefully chosen due to trimming needs and overgrowing.  I use no filter media other than a couple of carbon bags.  There is no clear ryme nor reason to filtering tanks at least not that I have heard or read about I hope I can be proven wrong though.  Is this a safe way to filter my reef tank?  I should add that I have a horrible live rate on fish probably around 60%.  But 100% live rate on corals. This is what leads me to worrying about a new sump until I know the exact design to build. If anyone can help me out with this it would be much appreciated.  I am still new to the hobby compared to most of you but I am very eager to learn.  I am easyiest to reach at night for I am a bartender so late nights are a normal thing.  I can give you any additional information via email if interested.  Looking forward to meeting all of you.

    where are you located, will you be joining us in coralville on saturday? it should be an awesome meeting, and the dry goods garage sale should have some good deals!

    Welcome to GIRS. I see you have some questions. You might break those up and post them in the general forum to get more responses.
    You should be able to get quite alot out of the club. There are a lot of people here that have been around for quite sometime that will be more then happy to help you out.

    Welcome to GIRS! You will get the best information for your tank here more than anywhere else. Like Billy said, break up your questions in the general forum. A few of the first things people are going to want to know: 1. Water Params - for fish: PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates (the least important). 2. The frequency and amount of water changes. 3. Salinity. 4. Temp. 5. Source of water (Tap or RO). 6. Stocking level
    If you are losing fish in an established tank there is something dramatically wrong. The good thing is it is probabally easy to determine. Bad news is it may take some time and salt to fix.

    unfortunetly I could not make it to the meeting I had to work.  I am located in Cedar Rapids SW side.  I will be putting some questions in the other forums with more info on my tank hope to meet all of you soon.  Thanks for the reply's. Phathead
