Website Issues

As some of you may have noticed, we have been experiencing some website issues over the last couple of days. Our site gets a lot of traffic and in order to handle the traffic we have recently switched hosting providers. This has gone really well for the most part, but it's been determined recently that we need to increase our plan to give us more memory. We have ordered this upgrade and that should take care of the site issues. GIRS pays hundreds of dollars every year to host this site and provide excellent performance for our club members. As officers, we understand that the website is very important to the club and we do everything that we can to make it excellent for our users. Thank you for being patient as we sort through and resolve these issues.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our registered members for your support of the club. If you're not already a member and you value the information that the site provides you, the ability to connect with and communicate with other local reefers, the events the club puts on, and the friends you have made through your affiliation with the club, please support the club by being a member. Membership dues pay for things like website hosting, web software licensing and support, event expenses, regional parties and other things important to our club.
Finally, I wanted to think JB for all of his hard work on the website. He has supported the website for years and his hard work and dedication to making the site work well has really been instrumental in the growth and prosperity of the club.

In an effort to improve the way that we handle welcoming new people to the club and other membership related activities, we have created a new position called the Membership Coordinator. There was recently a bid process for this position and I'm pleased to announce that it has been awarded to Eric Bell. Eric has many years experience in the hobby and with the club. Please take a moment and congratulate Eric on this appointment! Also, thanks to everyone that bid for this position. We hope that you continue to bid for other leadership positions in the club!

Fall Fest activities are here!

|
As we speak, board members and event coordinators are working hard getting things set up for Fall Fest tomorrow. Guest speakers and vendors are arriving in town, and everyone is looking forward to having a great event. After all, hundreds of hours of planning, labor and of course, a lot of money, are all coming together into this great event. Just to remind you, here's a brief summary of the Fall Fest activities:
TONIGHT
Anthony Calfo book signing at Pet's Playhouse - 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM
TOMORROW
Fall Fest at Lowe Park Arts & Environement Center - 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Things to remember:
- The Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center is in the middle of a bunch of corn fields. If you think you're driving out of town into a place where you wouldn't expect a show like this to be, you're probably driving in the right direction. :-) Check out the http://fallfest.iowareefs.com website for more information on how to get there.
- Bring a small cooler to put your corals in, especially if you're coming in from out of town.
- If you participated in the group buy and need to pick your stuff up, see AJ or ask at the GIRS information booth near the front check in table.
- Club members get a $5 discount on admission. If you plan on becoming a member, please do so online ASAP. You can also do so at the show, but it will delay your admission onto the show floor and hold up the admission line.
- Bring as much cash to the event as you think you may need. The nearest ATM is a couple of miles away.
- Name tags will be available at the check in desk. While not mandatory, they are encouraged. I know many of us don't live in the same area, but chat frequently on the site. Wearing a name tag is a great way of putting a face to the name of those people that you chat with on the site all the time.
- If you're planning to stay for the whole show, post show clean-up assistance is always appreciated.
After the show, please let us know what you thought. What we did right, what we could improve on. We work really hard on this event and would love to hear your ideas on ways that we can make it better. Also, thank the sponsors. Many of these prizes are donated and the revenues generated by ticket sales, help to pay the expenses for the event. This event would not be nearly as good without the generous contibutions from our sponsors. Please give these sponsors extra consideration when spending your money on reef gear and livestock and when you do buy from them, tell them that you're a member of the Greater Iowa Reef Society.
See you at the show!
