Calcium and Alkalinity Dosing Demonstration August 21st

Bulk Reef Supply, one of our longest and most loyal GIRS sponsors, has agreed to donate some of their Two Part Calcium and Alkalinity packages to demonstrate the ease and importance of maintaining calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium in our reef tanks.
We will be having a demonstration at my house in Cedar Falls where we can watch Bulk Reef Supply's video explaining everything about the kits they sell and the importance of using them. When the movie is over, we will mix up the solution, test my tank for the necessary parameters, show where to find the dosing instructions on Bulk Reef Supply's site, then we will show different ways to dose.
After the demonstration is over, there will be extra supply of this kit for everyone to take some home!
This demonstration will show everyone how easy it is to dose the necessary elements in their reef tank. This will be a wonderful time to meet our friendly trustees of the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area of GIRS and learn how to maintain a healthy environment for our prized corals.

Divers Den/Live Aquaria group buy

Live Aquaria is hosting a group buy for us including the Divers Den section.
Orders are being taken through Sunday the 27th, & will ship out Monday the 28th.
Orders for the Des Moines area need to be placed with Joe (flying moray) or in the Waterloo are through Craig (xroads).
Shipping is free so take advantage of this rare opportunity to get Divers Den livestock with no shipping charges.

Des Moines Area Fragging Demo June 26th

We will be hosting a coral fragging Demo for the Des Moines area members and anyone else who wants to come. This will be a great first for new members who are looking to score some fresh cut frags.
Also I would like to ask if anyone has some extra coral that needs fragging bring it and we can donate that stuff to new members or whomever. Joe and myself will be providing the necessary tools, superglue, plugs and whatever else is needed.
So all you need to bring is:
Cooler/bags if you want to bring anything home ;)
Coral that you want fragged(optional)
Food/drink for yourself or if you feel like sharing(please post if your bringing for everyone)
Also might want a chair to relax in

I would like to welcome Ruggerkc(Casey) as one of the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area trustees. due to other commitments, David requested to step down and Casey was nominated to fill the vacancy. Please congratulate Casey on his new role when you get the moment, thank your local staff for all the hard work they put into making the club great!
Interested in serving on the GIRS board as a regional trustee? Contact your local area trustee and see what you can do to assist them. You never know when a position might open up and you might be just the person we need to fill the spot!

CRPD K9 Benefit at Pet's Playhouse - Sat, May 22

This weekend, Pet's Playhouse is putting on their annual Cedar Rapids Police Department K9 Benefit event from 10 AM to 5 PM. The event will have demonstrations of the K9 dogs (i.e. attack, drug sniffing, etc), raffle for some great prizes including two excellent reef ranks, a live band, food, photo ops with animals and much more. Also, Aqueon (All-Glass) and Oceanic will be on site offering significantly discounted tanks, sold right off the truck. All kinds of pet related merchandise has been donated and will be sold at significantly discounted prices with 100% of the purchase price going back to the CRPD K9 fund. 100% of all event proceeds go to buy new K9 units for the CRPD. These dogs are at least $10,000 each and last year, this event was able to provide two new K9 units for the CRPD. This is a great event that Pet's Playhouse puts on to support the community, so let's do our part and support the event. See you there!

Spring Fest is this weekened and if you're not already excited about it, you should be! The vendor list is looking good with some brand new vendors including Reefkoi and Cherry Corals, and Iowa Pet Food and Seascapes. And how can we forget our other vendors that have been with us before like Dirk's, YZ Reef, Paul's Corals, Midwest Saltwater, House of Corals and Oceans Wonders. With our new venue, people can spread out and not worry about being cramped. And if that wasn't enough, two great speakers; Kevin Kohen and John Coppolina. And to add the cherry on top, our sponsors have been very generous and have contributed $2500 worth of reef gear and corals will be raffled!! Remember, GIRS members get a $5 discount and 5 free raffle tickets so it's also a great time to join if you're not already a member. It's going to be a great show. Don't miss it!!!
