drilling tempered galss

    wonder if anybody can give me any tips on drilling a tempered glass tank. Thanks for your time.

    If it's tempered glass DO NOT DRILL IT!!! it will shatter as soon as you try

    Ok, but with that being said how does the factory do it with success.

    The glass is drilled before it goes through the tempering process

    You can check with the manufacturer to see which panels are tempered. Sometimes they temper the bottoms but not the sides.

    More often then not the bottom is the only thing tempered. With that being said... you cannot drill tapered glass. The moment the tensile line is broken it will spider as designed.

    Why are the bottoms of tanks tempered to begin with? More flexible?

    More ridgid actually. Tempered glass had a higher tensile strength than non tempered glass. As we know glass is a liquid. Tempered glass is specially treated glass sammiched between a sheeting.

    There is a way you can tell if glass is tempered or not by using a smart phone and a polarized lens.

    Almost all LCD screens (laptops, smartphones) have a polarizing filter. If you hold a smartphone up to one side of the glass, and look at the phone from the other side with a polarized lens (sunglasses) then you will see lines and stripes.

    If the glass is not polarized, then you will see things normally.

    This is apparently not a foolproof method however
