Good question. Nothing has really happened the last couple months, hopefully something will get planned for September and announced shortly.

We tried events in May and had little interest. Then again in June and had very few people come to the BBQ events. Our plan is to have an informational meeting in Sept. Lee and I are both going to MACNA. There were very few weekends that work for me this summer due to family life and if members are not very active in summer. Sept I plane on a event 2nd or 3rd Sunday, but now I have to double check my sons football schedule. I am thinking about talking about water dowsing and automation. This along with a meet and greet. If you have something in mind let me know.
    Thanks

That sounds good too Lee. I figure you and I will have plenty of time to talk about it on way to MACNA. [IMG]

Lee, Do you need to be an active member of GIRS to be on the tank tour next month? I am trying to talk D007 into it, I have seen a few of his tanks and they are incredible!

Why do you need to be a paying member of GIRS to display your tank? I thought anyone is welcome to the meetings but only GIRS members could get in the door prizes or have a vote on things. Isn't the idea to share your experiences and help learn from others?

Allowing others to attend these events will also help promote the group and get others interested in the group. If non members can not participate you are only getting a small subset of the fish keeper population.

Please excuse the boldness of these questions/comments I am just providing an outside view of things as I am so new to the group.

No Problem Bill I will answer/address your concerns best I can..

Why do you need to be a paying member of GIRS to display your tank or come to GIRS meetings?

Because any event of GIRS are paid member benefits. We as paid member pay for these events, but we as Trustee let things slide a little with some meetings. Take for instance the last meeting of ours was a Girs meeting, but non of the Prizes or food was paid for by Girs. So I was hopping to get as many New member as I could to give some stuff away. Non paid member are entitled to at least one meeting with exception to the Holiday party to come check things out and see what its all about and what they are missing by not being a paid member. Voting is all done online and/or business meeting at end/Beginning of year.

Isn't the idea to share your experiences and help learn from others?

Yes and most non paid member get that online, but if you want this in a meeting setting then the benefit is left to paid member only. With the exception of the check it out rule.

Allowing others to attend these events will also help promote the group and get others interested in the group. If non members can not participate you are only getting a small subset of the fish keeper population.

We do allow non paid member to attend one meeting. Personally I encourage non paid members to attend a meeting or two, but after that they should become a member or not. I would never kick them out of any of our meetings of course. As a non member you would be missing out on a large part of this club that is paid for by its paid members for the low low fee of 20 bucks.

I hope this makes sense and I do understand what your saying, but we have rules to protect our paid member. If anyone could attend meeting when ever they wanted and come and go as they please where is the insetive to become a member? Encourage anyone to become a member so they can take part in meetings and tours. Like I said its the cheapest part of this hobby.

    Thanks

    KP

Thank you for explaining this to me Kyle. Respectfully I disagree but that is simply my opinion. I prefer to interact with people see someone's tanks and hear the varying opinions in person much more insightful then on line forums. I became a member for other reasons but I agree with you, that is one of the cheaper parts of this hobby /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

While it doesn't happen very often, we have had non-members open their homes and their tanks to the tour. I don't see any reason not to let them take part in the activity. Just count it as the "one free meeting" and let them get introduced to the area club members and show off their tank.

I was simply just answering questions! I don't know of a time where a non member has opened there door or maybe I just didn't know. lol I typically don't care as long as people participate! typically we don't have non member wanting or asking to participate. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Bill just have 007 pm or contact me with his info and will get him in. So far its just me! lol 319-331-5221

Bill I also think you would make a great Trustee when I step down for next year unless Lee wants to do it. lol Give it some thought ok!

The Butcher Block restaurant was on the last one I attended and I don't believe they were members. I am of the opinion that if anyone would like to open their homes to let others enjoy their hobby that is just wonderful. I know others that were on the tour benefited from the others throwing ideas that some had for their setups. I know that there were times we couldn't get a decent amount for a tour. Big or small we enjoy them all. The last one I was pleasantly surprised with Allens small 20 gallon setup. Plus it was also nice to see how some of the other members tanks that I have seen a while ago and to see their progress. I also believe that one should become a member for 20 bucks. That money helps support this website and other events. 20 dollars is a drop in the bucket and I do believe any member can recoup that expense just off of getting helpful information on specific issues, Buying a great frag or fish or getting the item for free, or finding that great deal on a piece of great equipment that you just couldn't live without or unloading that same piece of equipment that you just replaced. There is a wealth of knowledgeable people on this site and I know there are plenty who will go out their way to help others.

My thought is whoever is planning the event can make the determination based on the demand/spots available. Priority should go to members first if there is an excess of people wanting to show off their tank.

Like David said, if a non-member does participate, it would be considered their "one free meeting" and hopefully after having a good time, they decide to support the club.
