Lights? check....Time to finish the tank! 48x19x30 acrylic tank, 3/4" thick on all vertical panels with 1/2" bottom and eurobrace. I'm going to be setting up a bean-animal overflow to the sump, primary water movement will come from a Reeflo Snapper on a closed loop. Tank construction is well underway, pics coming soon. Here are a few renderings!! I put 90 deg elbows behind the bulkheads...saves 3" of space behind the tank. That's really my only variation to the design (air tube on open channel not pictured). Open to feedback on this minor design change, I don't see why it wouldn't work... Plumbing is to scale but not detailed, we all know what it looks like Ball valve for Siphon standpipe will be near the bottom by the sump. |

Ok, time for some action shots... Everything squared and edge with a router by "the boss". Spent one whole evening just prepping and getting everything perfectly true. I'm sure many of you will quickly figure out where we are assembling this tank after seeing a few pics! Standing the first end panel in place...clamped to 90 degree blocks with weight to hold in place during solvent application and pin removal: A shot of a couple wire pins in place: Both ends in place and ready to cure for the night: Front panel was placed the next day, starting to get heavy already! Brace in the center to eliminate any sag and keep the ends square: Time to prepare the eurobrace top...next update! |

More coming soon.... Cutting holes and working on the internal box. May be bringing it home!! Here's what I have from working on the eurobrace. I made a template out of a $6 pc of particle board that we could use as a router template...much easier to get a good finished pc of acrylic!! I forgot to snap a pic of the finished piece but I'll get some good shots of it on the tank to show it off |

Ok, here are a couple pics of the eurobrace top after it was added to the tank... For drilling the holes in the back, we decided it would be best to use the hole saw on some scrap particle board or MDF and use them as router templates for a cleaner finish. You can see a couple stuck up inside the tank in this picture: And here we go...routing in action: |

After the holes were done we moved the tank to my garage so I could buff and polish the edges, install the overflow and paint the back and one side of the tank. Naturally I have more pics! Sorry again for how grainy they are... Started by taping off a perimeter for wet sanding... After sanding, hit it with a buffer to really make the edges shine! Here is looking at the front panel from the side with the tank on it's back: Installed the over flow. It's a shortened coast-to-coast style with a removable front panel so I can get to the bulkheads should I ever need to service them. Prepping for paint: There's the boss looking on: Paint done, plastic removed (standing on my old 90 gal acrylic tank): |

TIME FOR A TEST FIT!!!! After moving the tank onto the stand I can tell there will be a few "adjustments" made to the wall. I obviously built the stand to match the maple cabinets and the old tank had an internal overflow...so the 4 1/2" clearance was plenty for return hoses. This tank poses some unique challenges. I'm sure you've noticed that I'm using the Bean-animal overflow which usually requires quite a bit of backspace. I turned mine with 90 degree elbows right out of the bulkhead and brought them down to a 3 1/2" profile. The bigger challenge is with the 2" elbows that feed my closed loop. They come out almost 5" from the back of the tank so I'll be removing a small "Y" shaped strip of drywall to accommodate the plumbing. I would rather do that than pull the stand out past the face of the cabinets. Anyway...here is a pic from the test fit onto the stand. Crown molding will be added to the top that I will pick up from the place that built the kitchen cabinets for me. I can describe how this looks with one word....SEXY!!!! I'll get plenty of pictures with a better camera soon, but now it's time to pull it away from the wall and start the plumbing |
